May mayhem

It may have started and finished with lovely weather but this month certainly brought us a mixed bag. We started getting a sun tan with the Saturday Group litterpicking Slade. A beautiful sandy cove just along the coast from Horton – I say just along the coast – it’s quite a distance when you have to carry all the collected litter back along the coast path!

Other beach days weren’t as pleasant as one would hope – nearly lost the volunteers in the misty rain at Three Cliffs Bay and the arrival of 3 dead cows on Rhossili Beach had to be dealt with. Fair play to our volunteers who really do put their hand to anything. This week they have carried a solid oak bench half a mile uphill in Bishopston Valley. It is now installed and does make for a very nice picnic spot.

We really do value the work our volunteers do and we celebrated this at a special day in Tredegar House where we had our very own volunteer Oscars. Staff and volunteers got together to celebrate all things volunteering in Wales and we managed to squeeze in a quick tour of part of the property as well. It was a day to be inside as the heavens certainly opened! Tomorrow sees us have our summer volunteer BBQ – perfect day for it!

We have been slowly plugging away at clearing the burn’t gorse from below the Lookout at Rhossili and we drafted a few extra helpers in from Gower College Swansea – They went home looking like coal miners! They also assisted clearing some pines at Cwm Ivy and had a go at log splitting in the woodyard.

I attended a 2 day volunteering ‘convestival’ at Calke Abbey – getting together with other volunteer managers from NT properties all over the UK to share ideas and best practice. The volunteers from Purbeck shared one of their best initiatives – Purbeck Cider! Only 1 glass mind!

I also spent a day at the Hay Festival along with Kim and Kathryn helping out on the NT stand. It was cold, but a fun day was had making clay monsters out of ‘wild’ things found in the woods. And for those that know ….I don’t do kids!!
