Bioblitz & Bug Hunts

Wow, what a busy few weeks of events we’ve had!

Not only did we have a wonderful musical celebration of our glorious coastline at our Big Beach Picnic at Rhossili (click here for photos and video of the day) we’ve also held our ever popular 50 Things Family Fun Day, closely followed by a 24 hour Bioblitz at Cwm Ivy – Phew!

Our Ranger Kathryn gives us a round up of what went on  ……

50 Things Family Woodland Fun Day – Saturday 27th June 2015

What is it about our 50 Things Family Woodland Funday? The sun always shines, and this event was no exception.

We had lots of willing volunteers, including participants of a working holiday, the local scout group doing campfire cooking demonstrations and green woodworking from Stickman and Matt Carol to help make the event a success.

Children took their 50 Things scrap book and ticked off activities, such as building a home for wildlife (in the form of a bird box) and making dens, while the parents watched on with a cup of tea and a welsh cake in the glorious setting of the Lodge Bunkhouse at Cwm Ivy – what a lovely day!

And if you missed it, we’re running another on Saturday 5th September!

Bioblitz – Sunday 28th – Monday 29th June 2015

As part of our Coast 2015 celebrations, 25 Bioblitzes are taking place this year at National Trust coastal properties.

So what exactly is a Bioblitz??

Well, it’s a 24 hours search to find as much wildlife as you can in a particular area. Gower’s Bioblitz took place at Cwm Ivy, where there’s a variety of habitats – beach, marsh, woodland, dunes and limestone grassland.

Lots of local nature specialists and enthusiasts gave their time for free to help us search and identify everything from big old trees to the tiniest of bugs. And children from 2 local schools got involved as well as members of the general public.

Being a National Nature Reserve, we had high hopes for finding lots of species and we weren’t disappointed. Results are still coming in, but we hope the final figure will be close to the one thousand mark!  We will post our finding as soon as the results are in.
