Celebrating the Coast at Rhossili

Toast the Coast!  –   Big Beach Picnic at Rhossili on Saturday 4th July 2015

The sun came out, music filled the air and visitors arrived with their picnic baskets and deck chairs to join us in a huge celebration of our wonderful coastline – Watch here! …..

Our Big Beach Picnic at Rhossili was one of four special picnics taking place in Wales, with more than 20 major events across the shores of Britain and Northern Ireland, all held as part of our Coast 2015 celebrations.

We decided on a musical theme for our celebrations and were delighted when Nick from Coach House Pianos kindly offered to locate a grand piano on the cliffs for the day – entertaining people while they sat with their picnics to soak up the sunshine and admire the glorious views overlooking the Worms Head and the award winning Rhossili Bay.

The grand piano being transported into position on the cliff top, was entertainment in itself!

The day started off with the the celtic-classical sounds of The Meadows – a lovely young family, full of musical talent.

Morriston Orpheus Choir were up next – listening to a world-famous choir overlooking a world-famous beach was truly breathtaking. Aside from the picnic-goers who had set up camp for the afternoon, dozens of walkers stopped to listen to their 40 minute set.  Calon Lan never fails to bring goosebumps, and the Welsh National Anthem at the end got everyone standing proud and joining in.

Stephen Pearson, Engagements Secretary for Morriston Orpheus Choir said “We were delighted to support the National Trust at their Big Beach Picnic event, and to sing at such a wonderful location as Rhossili.  We’re pleased that everyone has come along with their picnics to admire the views and celebrate this wonderful coastline which the National Trust so carefully looks after”

We also had Penclawdd Brass Band (or as they introduced themselves “The only Brass Band on the Gower peninsula!) who managed to get a few people up swinging their hips with their jolly tunes.

The entertainment continued throughout the afternoon with harps and accordions …

Celtic harpist Delyth Jenkins, who brought along two harps – the smaller one she tells us accompanied her on a walk around the Pembrokeshire coast path – wow! And, Francois the Accordionist whose Parisian accordion playing was a delight to listen too – such an entertaining guy!

Local young musicians Luke Rance on saxophone and Simon Price on piano rounded off the afternoon nicely with their talents.

We’re pleased to say that once everyone had left, the area was litter free – thanks to Keep Wales Tidy promoting their #2MinuteBeachClean – encouraging people to do their bit in keeping the area tidy for all to enjoy throughout the summer.

The comments from people proved how much they love to visit and enjoy this wonderful coastline. Visitor Jayne said “Amazing! Absolutely amazing! This has to be the best beach in the world. The coastline is superb and if we don’t look after it …. I couldn’t bear it. Its ours!”
