December Diary

Welcome to 2017. You’ll be pleased to know that i finally shrugged off my cold over the Christmas holidays but i promise I still won’t subject you to my singing.

Before we get really into the New Year here’s a quick account of how last year ended.

We started December at Cwm Ivy clearing scrub from the Tor and getting the Lodge ready for Christmas. We finished cutting the gorse by the Fairway on Rhossili Cliffs and undertook some running repairs on the dry stone wall.

The Saturday group spent the day in Bishopston Valley coppicing. It turned out a really nice day which was useful as the slope we were working on was considerable and we didn’t need any extra help in sliding down it!

We have spent a couple of days continuing with the rhododendron clearance on Ryers Down with some volunteers even coming out over Christmas to spend the day burning the cuttings. We did go to the pub for a little drink after.

The Wednesday volunteers spent the day in Ceredigion clearing gorse at Rhos Cwmsaeson, to help Vicky out with the Magnificent Meadows Project. We were again lucky with the weather as it threatened to rain but held off for most of the day.

A couple of days were spent at Bishopston Valley Hillfort clearing scrub from the Scheduled Ancient Monument. We still have a bit of it to rake off but will combine that with a days coppicing in the next couple of weeks.

A few of our volunteers helped out with the Mari Lwyd lantern Parade in Pennard which attracted an amazing 170 people. It was a cracking sight through the village.

We had our annual Christmas meal at the King Arthur Hotel which was lovely. Congratulations and thanks went out to all our volunteers who have made this year amazing. Special note to Gillian, Chris and Stephen who all received their 5 year Long Service Awards. And another special note to Howard, Malcolm and Ruth who received their 30 year Long Service Awards as Voluntary Wardens on Gower.

The final week before Christmas saw us fencing in the Vile. The gateway we started working on was a little wet and muddy but we did manage to get the gate posts in. And with the help of my big new shiny red toy….aka a post driver…..we managed to get quite a few more posts in!

I look forward to another year of working with all our amazing volunteers. Thank you for a wonderful 2016.
